Self-Help Guide: Moving to an eVisa

The UK government is transitioning to digital proof of immigration status, known as an eVisa, for many visa holders. This means that individuals who previously used physical immigration documents (such as Biometric Residence Permits, Biometric Residence Cards, and passport stamps) will need to create a UKVI account to access their eVisa.

If you need help understanding or updating your eVisa, please visit www.gov.uk/evisa for official guidance.

If you currently use a physical immigration document (such as a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), Biometric Residence Card (BRC), or passport stamp) to prove your immigration status, you need to switch to a digital eVisa.

What You Need to Do
Check if you need an eVisa
If you hold a BRP, BRC, or a passport with an immigration stamp or vignette sticker, visit www.gov.uk/evisa to find out what steps you need to take.
Create a UKVI account
This is free and easy to do. It allows you to access and prove your immigration status online.
Your immigration status remains the same—it’s just the way you prove it that’s changing.
Travel Considerations
Visa holders should still carry their valid physical immigration documents when traveling internationally, along with their passport.
If you already have an eVisa, update the Home Office with details of any passport you intend to travel with via Update My Details.
British and Irish Citizens
If you now hold British citizenship, you do not need to do anything.
If you are a dual national without a British passport (except for Irish passport holders), you may need to take action in the future regarding proof of your right to abode.
BRP Holders
Keep your BRP after creating a UKVI account, as you may need the reference number for future applications.
Even after BRPs expire, you can still use the right to work and rent services if you have valid immigration status—though registering for a UKVI account is recommended.
